Through the first 11 months of the year, Japanese companies made 10.1 million cars, trucks and buses. During the same period, U. S. production fell from 10.9 million to about 7 4 million. Smokeout Results A telephone survey which was conducted on Smokeout Day indicates that interest in this year's event was quite high across the nation. National awareness of the Smokeout was 68.8% and 36% of the identified smokers were trying to quit. National estimates this to represent 19 million smokers. In North Carolina participation was higher than ever with 33 units involved Thousands of people in N. C. were made aware of Smokeout and the opportunity and motivation it offers to those individuals who want to stop smoking. The Christmas greeting in Dec. 23rd issue from Les Emary was quite remarkable. Mr Emary, who is from Chichester, Sussex, England is 90 years old and visited friends in Tryon this fall to see the color of the mountains. He has a beautiful hand and sent out hand lettered Christmas cards. The one in the Bulletin was done by him. He sent his greeting to The Dear People of Tryon. He will be 91 the 4th day of February. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bolick and son, Ben, of Chapel Hill spent the Christmas holidays with Mrs. Bolick's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Boyce Williams of Tryon. Sgt. Frank P. Brown, Jr. and Pvt. Mark Wilkins, both of the U. S. Army are home in Tryon for the holidays. Engaged Ms. Valerie Lee Tenny Capt. and Mrs. V. L. Tenney, of Route One, Columbus, N. C. have announced the engagement of their daughter, Valerie Lee to Mark Thomas Tipton. son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. Tipton of Saginaw, Michigan. Ms. Tenney, a Speech Pathologist at Saint Anthony Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, received a B.A. Degree from Michigan State University and a Masters Degree from Central Michigan University, both in Communication Disorder’s. Mr. Tipton received a B.A. Degree in Civil Engineering and a Masters Degree in Mechanics from Michigan State University. He is currently employed with General Electric in the aircraft engine group located in Cincinnati, Ohio. A summer wedding is planned. Foster of Camp Casey, Korea are parents of a son, Robert Eric. He is the grandson of SFC and Mrs. Robert R. Godfrey of Ft. Hood, Texas and the great-grandson of Mr. and Mrs. D. B. Wilson of Rt. I, Mill Spring. Gay Fowler of New York City is spending the holidays with her mother, Mrs. Royal Fowler of Foxden Farm. Scott Alewine of Minneapolis Minn, is spending the Christmas holidays with his parents Mr and Mrs. Richard E.
